- Safety is of utmost concern. Being on and around a truck is inherently dangerous. Please use caution and move carefully at all times.
- As a new driver, you need to keep your full attention on driving safely. Do not allow things to distract you from your job. Such things as cell phones, eating or drinking, adjusting the radio, using the Zonar, are to be avoided. Anything that keeps you from having both hands on or near the wheel.
- Listening to the radio can be very distracting to a new driver and can hinder essential communication in the training environment. For these reasons, the radio will be off any time we are training, i.e. any time the student is driving and the trainer is in the passenger seat. At other times, the driver is free to listen via an ear bud. (Note: It is illegal in many states to drive with both ears covered.)
- There may be times when, as you drive, I see something that I perceive as a danger or threat that you may not. Please be prepared to follow my directions even if you don’t understand at the time. I will explain when the danger has passed.
- Highway courtesy is important. How you drive affects how other people see truck drivers in general, and Knight Transportation in particular. You are a rolling billboard for the company. Don’t let other people’s rudeness affect your attitude or behavior.
- Company rules that must be followed. Violation may expose us both to disciplinary action by the company or DOT, up to and including termination.
- Only move the truck when I am watching.
- No weapons or violence.
- No alcohol while assigned to a truck.
- No drugs, ever.
- Living in the small environment of a truck can be difficult for one person. It can be almost impossible when two different people try to share that same space. While I am happy to share my truck and I enjoy teaching, please remember that this is my home.
- There is a dog on the truck. There will be dog fur and dander. If you are allergic to or otherwise uncomfortable with a dog, please let the training dept. know immediately so you can be reassigned to another trainer.
- There is no smoking (or vaping) on the truck. If you smoke, please do so at least 20 feet away from the truck and dispose of your butts appropriately outside in a container. If you chew, please use a tightly sealed bottle as a spittoon.
- I will provide you space to stow your belongings. Please keep things neat and orderly.
- Eating while on the run can be difficult at times. We will try to stop when hungry, but you may want to carry snacks or other food on the truck. Feel free to keep some food in the cooler if you wish. if you so desire, I will offer you advice and instruction on how to shop and prepare food in order to minimize the cost of living on the road.
- While showering every day is usually not possible, we will try to stop and shower every 2-3 days.
- Remember the rules we all learned as children: if you open it, close it; if you get it out, put it away; if you turn on a light, turn it off.
- I do not enjoy vulgarity, profanity, off color stories or jokes, or pornography. Please refrain from these things while on my truck.
